A
gemstone is a mineral that is prized for its beauty, due to its rarity,
color, luster, brilliance, transparency and hardness. The basic
considerations of a fine gemstone are color, cut, clarity and carat
weight.
The
four precious gemstones are diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald. Semi
precious gemstones are also finely faceted and cabochon stones.
Mineral
gemstones can be identified and classified according to certain
properties, ranging from their relative hardness to their weights on the
Mohs scale of 1 - 10 with diamond being 10.
Uncut
gemstones appear like ordinary stones. It is the cutters talent that
transforms them into beautiful faceted cuts or smooth cabochons.
Types
of cuts:
Round,
oval, cushion, emerald, baguette, square, marquise, pendeloque
According
to legend certain gemstones bring good luck to their wearer who was born
in the month associated with their birthday.
